Explanation of 2001: A Space Odyssey

If you haven’t seen Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey, go watch it now and then come back. Gahead, we’ll wait;-) (If you need convincing, read the user comments on IMDB).

OK, now that we’re all on the same page, check out this site to see a thorough flash interpretation of the movie.

What’d ya think? Any points of disagreement?

  1. Hello. I bookmarked you when I saw this and finally watched the 20 minute flash movie. Wow, it gave me chills! I’m not sure I agree with every nuance, but there certainly seems to be a shift in consciousness taking place. What if our evolution was programmed for understanding when the time is right? Is the time near?

  2. lordy this reminds me of first year in uni. everybosy running around jerking off over 2001 a space odyssey. yknow what, i think it s a good movie and, technologically/filmically speaking it did do a lot but, like all of kubriks films, i couldnt help but thinking his end result was so so at best. stanley made some kick ass films but i cant agree with all these people who think his every utterance was genius. it wasnt!!!! watch eyes wide shut and kubriks awful human weaknesses are horribly obvious.
my thoughts go in this direction. yes 2001 was a good movie, but it wasnt great. weve all seen better and we should own up to it and not feel like we have to kowtow to this general concensus that kubrik was some kind of genius. he was good, but my god lads he produced some pure shite as well

  3. Hey Rob,

I hear you about some works/directors being over-hyped, but I also think we need to be careful not to get too staunch in our anti-popularism. E.g.There are a number of decent actors/directors/bands that I never gave a chance simply because they had a huge fan following. 2001 was groundbreaking. Whether it achieved everything that Kubrick set out to do, or whether we–equipped with the infinite wisdom of hindsight–would have done things differently is neither here nor there. He took the masses on a profound journey through philosophical waters that we each have a stake in. That achievement alone is to be applauded, as it goes way beyond what could be said of most of the films that have ever been made. BTW–I totally agree that some of Kubrick’s works were less than excellent, but I’m stickin’ to my guns on A Space Odyssey:-)

  4. With all respect who don’t like it, they don’t have the right to judge that its not good ! the movie is chilly and the most important part that the movie liker or non liker don’t realize is that, the movie has the strength to awaken things in the watcher, that’s the part that stays mystery, if the person is uncreative, I personally respect all being, but don’t put it on Kubrick! he left us a part to fill on our own!
