Sinbad Still ALIVE!!! (Phew!)

Imagine my surprise when I read the first claim that we would be without the relentless fits of laughter brought on by the legendary comic Sinbad! Heart stopped, googling hysterically I found this heavenly slice of good news. ALIVE! Sinbad is ALIVE!!!

Regaining my senses, it occurred to me that this might be a publicity stunt to generate interest in the 50-year-old, not-exactly-the-IT-man-of-the-decade, blast-from-the-forgotten-B-movie-past. That’s when–on a hunch– I decided to check Google Zeitgeist. Lo and behold: Sinbad was number 5 on the Gaining Search Queries ranking. And then I thought: that thar is a pretty pathetic play for publicity.

First of all, how non-existent does your career have to be for an Internet faked death hoax to actually catch on? Pretty sad. And secondly, at some point Sinbad’s PR team will just have to realize one simple fact: Sinbad’s comeback doesn’t depend on people remembering his name, it depends on people remembering that he was funny–and that’s just not going to happen, no matter how many guerilla spammers our goofy-faced friend hires.

And then Sinbad’s all like:

‘But, but, but maybe they ‘ll remember that funny bit I did on that one show back in the day when……’

And I just go:

‘Look, you need to just stop right there ’cause you already done embarrassed yourself and now you startin’ to embarrass me.’

An’ then I just break it down to ‘im like this:

‘You know what? For real though, this is what most of us thought: Oh yeahhhhhhhh. I forgot all about that corny-ass fool! Good thing he alright, I guess. Now where was I…..oh yeah, I remember……lemme get back forgettin’ how unfunny Sinbad’s stupid-ass was!’

Thanks to the lovely PR people on Sinbad’s payroll, every one of us gets to start the purging of undesirable information process over again from the beginning.

Here’s to a Sinbad-less FY2007! (And no, I don’t want him dead; I just don’t want him.)

  1. I for one am glad Sinbad is alive. He is a very funny man, and clean funny at that! The world can stand a couple more like him.

    Thanks for joining in. I truly appreciate your comments:-)

    Well that’s the beauty of humor in my opinion: we don’t have to agree about who is funny and who is just annoying. Living as an expat in Japan, I am constantly reminded of the vast differences of opinion when it comes to deciding what passes as humorous–even among fellow English speakers! But really, wouldn’t the world be boring if everyone thought The Dave Chappelle Show was the funniest production ever?….or Monty Python? or Seinfeld, for that matter?

    I do agree with you, however, that ‘clean funny’ has its place in the world, especially for those times when there are kids around and you can’t find the remote;-) I suppose I will acquire a greater taste for ‘clean funny’ once I actually start makin’ babies and worrying about the vile words that may corrupt their innocent little minds. In the meantime, I am trying to squeeze the most out of my final days of raw and unabashed ‘dirty funny.’

    Oh yeah and, again, I don’t wish death upon Sinbad or anyone else. I just want to go back to a week ago when I had pleasantly forgotten all about the jolly man:-)

  3. Man, poor Sinbad. Houseguest was a classic, and kudos to McDonalds for deciding to go for heavy product placement in a film whose main character is an overweight man. That showshow, just like the rest of us, they see ole Sinbad for what he is….the Stephen Hawking of comedy, not that he speaks through a machine, etc., but the fact that his routines are blackholes, into which all laughter is compressed to a singularity. Keep up the good work Steve. Any blog that updates me on failed comedians’ life status is good with me.
